Hails from a long lineage of athletes and Saint Xavier High School alums, as the Musselman family received the Louisville Catholic Sports Hall of Fame's Howard Schnellenberger Family Award in 2014; Cooper's father, Chester, helped Saint Xavier win the Kentucky High School Athletic Association boys golf state title in 1981 and played collegiately at the University of Kentucky; his uncle, Tom Jr., also played at Saint Xavier and Kentucky; his grandfather, Tom Sr., and great uncle, Bill are both Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame inductees who prepped at Saint Xavier, with Bill also winning a boys basketball state title in 1962; his great aunt Anne Lee and great uncle David were competitive high school swimmers, and another great aunt, Cissy, played field hockey and basketball at Sacred Heart Academy.
Father, Chester, is the president and CEO of Musselman Hotels, which developed or repositioned more than 40 hotels under franchise agreements and currently owns and/or operates 12 hotels throughout Kentucky, including the famed Seelbach Hilton in Louisville, and one in Virginia.
Grandfather, Tom Sr., was inducted into the Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame in 2005, in addition to previous inductions into the Saint Xavier Athletic Hall of Fame and University of Louisville Athletic Hall of Fame; he helped Saint Xavier win its first three boys golf state titles in 1951, 1952 and 1954, then played collegiately at Louisville (1955-59), which has since named its team facility the Tom Musselman Golf Center, and was instrumental in the formation of the Kentucky Junior Golf Foundation, in addition to co-founding the Musselman-Dunne Junior Golf Tour, which merged with the Kentucky PGA Junior Tour in 2018. In 2006, Louisville presented Tom with the Hickman-Camp Award, which recognizes an individual's extraordinary support of the athletics department and is considered the highest award the department bestows. He also enjoyed a successful business career, beginning in construction and transitioning to operating a successful chain of pizza stores in east Tennessee, after which he returned to Louisville in 1986 and entered the hospitality industry, eventually developing Musselman Hotels with the help of his sons, Chester and Tom Jr. (Cooper's father and uncle).
Great uncle, Bill, was inducted into the Kentucky Golf Hall of Fame in 1996; he graduated from Saint Xavier High School and played collegiately at University of Colorado, where was an All-America First Team selection as a senior in 1968 and teammates with 20-time PGA TOUR winner and three-time U.S. Open champion Hale Irwin, who played for the Buffaloes from 1964-67. Bill also won five Kentucky State Amateur Championships (1968, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1978) and the 1968 Colorado State Amateur Championship.
Uncle, Tom Jr., golfed at Saint Xavier High School and University of Kentucky; he won the 1989 Kentucky State Amateur Championship.
Teammates with Justin Thomas for two seasons at Saint Xavier High School; he graduated in 2013, while Thomas graduated in 2011.
Proposed to his wife on top of the famed 10-story Seelbach Hotel in Louisville, forgetting that she was scared of heights.
Musselman is passionate about Kosair Children's Hospital, as his best friend had cancer as a child.
At age 7, made a hole-in-one in his first competitive tournament.
Best early golf memory was the 2008 Ryder Cup at Valhalla, described as the best sporting event he's ever seen.
If he wasn't playing golf, he would be coaching.
