    Only played baseball until he was 13, and continued to play baseball through high school; his notable achievements included winning the California Babe Ruth State Championship Game (15-year-old Division) in which he pitched seven innings and only allowed one run, and had the game-winning hit in extra innings which sent his team to regionals; he also pitched and played second base on the freshman and junior varsity teams at Elk Grove High School.

    Got his start in golf from his father, Don Levin, was a two-time All-American golfer at San Jose State (second team in 1978, third team in 1979) and played the PGA TOUR in the early 1980s; he made 45 career starts from 1981-83 with a career-high finish of T6 at the 1981 Valero Texas Open.
