The 2024 PGA TOUR Champions season continues after a week off following the Trophy Hassan II in Morocco, where Argentina's Ricardo Gonzalez pulled away on the back nine with a heroic performance of four birdies in a row down the stretch to capture his first Champions Tour win. PGA TOUR Champions returns stateside to Tucson, Arizona, for the Cologuard Classic.
Here are three things to know about this week’s event:
1. A new home
A staple on the PGA TOUR Champions for nearly a decade, the Cologuard Classic has found a new place to call home. After nine years of being played at Omni Tucson National, the 10th edition will be played at La Paloma Country Club. Nestled in the Santa Catalina Mountains, La Paloma features 27 holes across the property.
2. David Toms looks to defend title
Toms is teeing it up for the eighth time in the tournament's 10 years of existence. His best finish was the most recent edition of the event in which he captured the 2023 title. Converting on the 36-hole lead to win by one over Robert Karlsson, the 2023 Cologuard Classic was Toms’ third Champions Tour win and first since 2020.
3. A strong field in the desert
Each of the top five players in the current Charles Schwab Cup standings, including No. 1 Steven Alker will tee it up in Tucson this week. Eight of the nine past champions of the Cologuard Classic are in the 2024 field, including 2022 champion Miguel Angel Jiménezand 2018 winner Steve Stricker, who won last year’s Charles Schwab Cup.
The 78-player field also includes seven members of the World Golf Hall of Fame, including Fred Couples, Ernie Els and 2024 inductee Padraig Harrington.
