Brett Quigley hung on Sunday to win the Constellation FURYK AND FRIENDS presented by Circle K, holing a 6-foot par putt on the 18th hole to beat Steven Alker by one stroke.
Quigley, 54, entered the day with a one-shot lead over Jerry Kelly, and he stretched it to three with a birdie on the 10th hole, his third birdie of the day against no bogeys. But a double bogey on the par-3 14th brought a slew of players back into the hunt.
“I didn't think I hit enough club to hit it hole high on 14,” Quigley said. “I knew I didn't want to get it hole high on 14, and then it was -- I mean, honestly, I could have been there all day. I had such a horrible lie to start with, then I thought I made the third shot and it goes right over the green again. I'm like, you're kidding me.
“I wasn't panicked, I was just more mad at myself for making it more interesting.”
Still, no one could reach 11 under, and Quigley parred the final four holes to claim the second victory of his PGA TOUR Champions career.
The 18th wasn’t without drama, as Quigley barely reached the front of the green and left himself 6 feet for the win, but made a gritty up and down to seal the victory.
“I knew if I could get it to the front of the green, I thought I could have a reasonable chance of two-putting it, but I hit a horrible first putt,” Quigley said after he smother-hooked his drive into the rough. “I saw Flesch's putt go pretty hard left to right and mine just kind of tracked left. I'm like, ‘You've got to be kidding me, a 6-footer left to right a cup? Could you leave yourself a worse putt?’ I just stood over it, like you know what, I've done it before.”
It was Quigley’s fifth time entering the final round with at least a share of the lead, but it was the first time he was able to close the deal. His first victory came at the Morocco Champions in 2020.
Alker finished one behind Quigley with a 4-under 68 to move up from a tie for seventh when the day started. The solo second moves him from fifth to third in the race for the Schwab Cup.
“Yeah, it means a lot,” the New Zealand native said. “It's a long season, just got to keep up the fitness. I had a few weeks off, St. Louis and Sioux Falls, gave me just time to regroup and get things together. I've got some golf courses coming up I like. Richmond (Dominion Energy Charity Classic) obviously I'm defending and home game in Phoenix (Charles Schwab Cup Championship), so some nice weeks coming up.”
Glen Day finished with his second consecutive 68 to finish alone in third at 9 under.
