Team Daly Round 1 highlight at PNC Father Son
ORLANDO, Fla. -- John and Little John Daly birdied the final six-holes for a 13-under 59 and a one-stroke lead in the PNC Father-Son Challenge.
The Dalys played the back nine in 8-under 28 in occasional rain at Ritz-Carlton Golf Club Grande Lakes.
David and Carter Toms were second in the scamble event, and Jack and grandson GT Nicklaus matched Stewart and Connor Cink at 61. Davis and Dru Love shot 62.
Things to Know
- Lee Trevino made his 21st appearance, the only player to play in every edition of the PNC Father Son Challenge.
First-Round Lead Notes

David/Carter Toms (2nd/2-under)
- Recorded six consecutive birdies on holes 3-8 and added six additional birdies on the back nine for 12-under 60.
- One of four teams making debut at PNC Father Son Challenge; Jim/Mike Furyk (T10/-8), Matt/Peter Kuchar (T13/-7), Darren/Tyrone Clarke (T17/-5).
- With a win, Team Toms would become the fourth duo to claim the PNC Father Son Challenge in their first appearance, joining Angel/Angel, Jr. Cabrera (2017), Stewart/Connor Cink (2013) and Raymond Floyd/Ray Floyd, Jr. (1995).
- Former PGA Champion finished top-10 in half of his 22 starts on PGA TOUR Champions in 2018, including victory at U.S. Senior Open. Ended the season No. 7 in the Charles Schwab Cup.
Stewart/Connor Cink (T3/-11)
- Made nine birdies, including four-in-a-row to start their round, plus an eagle at No. 18 for 11-under 61.
- Eagle at final hole came when Stewart holed 25-foot putt after Connor had putted first.
- Stewart has wife, Lisa as his caddie this week while Connor has brother, Reagan carrying his bag.
- Seeking to win the PNC Father-Son for a second time after claiming the 2013 title by three strokes (61-61—122).
- Partnered son Reagan in 2015 and 2017 and has never finished out of the top-10 in five previous starts (Won/2013, T8/2014, T9/2015, T2/2016, T6/2017).
- Highlight last season was T2 at Travelers Championship, his best result on TOUR since victory at 2009 The Open Championship, one of six career PGA TOUR titles.
- Qualified for the FedExCup Playoffs for the 10th time and finished the season No. 73 in the standings.
Jack/GT Nicklaus (T3/-11)
- Carded eagle at No. 3 and four straight birdies (Nos. 5-8) to turn 6-under before five additional birdies on back nine resulted in 11-under 61.
- Eagle came when the duo selected Jack’s tee shot, GT hit the green and putted first, holing from 18 feet.
- 61 marked Team Nicklaus’ lowest 18-hole score at PNC Father-Son since 1999 (59/R2).
- Jack is making his 17th appearance at PNC Father-Son Challenge, but second consecutive with grandson GT.
- Duo finished 15th last year in first appearance together.
- Won 1999 edition of the tournament with son, Gary, who is caddying for his son GT this week.
- Victory in 1999 is one of five top-5 finishes in this event (3rd/1997, 1st/1999, T5/2000, 2nd/2003, T5/2013).

- Bernhard Langer, partnering daughter Jackie Langer John, is attempting to become the first to win with a record third different child. All multiple winners of the tournament have done so with more than one child.
- Stewart Cink (2013) and Jack Nicklaus (1999), both T3 at 11-under and two off the lead, seek to join the list of players with multiple PNC Father Son Challenge victories: Raymond Floyd (5) – 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001; Larry Nelson (3) – 2004, 2007, 2008; Bernhard Langer (3) – 2005, 2006, 2014.
