Grew up playing competitive tennis like his brothers and cousins; he saw a golf course beside the tennis courts and begged his parents to let him go play golf. Nobody in the family knew anything about the game, or even how to play. He picked up the game fairly quickly with the help of Harvey Brock, a local pro at Boscobel Golf Club, around the time he was 7 years old. He won the first tournament he entered (against 8-9 year olds) and was hooked.

His dad took him to junior tournaments when he was younger, and on one occasion he was so nervous they had to pull over to the side of the road so he could throw up. His dad said he didn't have to play and they could go home, if he wanted to. He looked at his dad and said, "No, I love it."

Always leaves his sweater on when he’s making birdies, no matter how hot it gets.
