Wyndham Clark earns first TOUR title at Wells Fargo Championship

WYNDHAM CLARK EARNS FIRST TOUR TITLE AT WELLS FARGO CHAMPIONSHIP

Wyndham Clark left little doubt after securing his first PGA TOUR title on Sunday, a four-stroke victory over Xander Schauffele at the Wells Fargo Championship, a Designated event no less. But it was the profound emotion that resonated across Quail Hollow Club, the 29-year-old Colorado native clearly struck by the magnitude of the moment. Clark’s late mother Lise passed away in 2013 at age 55, after battling breast cancer for 16 years, and Lise always believed her son would compete on the PGA TOUR. With a statement victory in Charlotte at 19 under, just two shy of Rory McIlroy’s tournament record in 2015, Clark proved his mom and all his supporters spot-on. “There is so much that goes into this,” Clark said, “and there are so many times that I’ve wanted to cry and break clubs … to get to this point is so sweet. It’s just amazing to finally do this. My mom is not here, and I wish she was, but I know she’s watching.” Propelled by an 8-under 63 in Saturday’s third round, the University of Oregon alum carried a two-stroke lead into Sunday, and a closing 3-under 68 was plenty to keep Schauffele and the field at arm’s length. Clark moves to , and his play offers the question: Could he be the next rising star to soon ascend into the game’s elite?

The PGA TOUR returns to TPC Craig Ranch where world No. 2 Scottie Scheffler is back in action. Joining him is Jordan Spieth, who is looking to build off his runner-up result at the AT&T Byron Nelson from a year ago. The man to beat, however, is two-time defending champion K.H. Lee. By defending his title at TPC Craig Ranch, Lee joined the likes of Sam Snead, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson as the only players to pull the trick in tournament history. Now Lee will look to join even more rarified air with a three-peat. Hideki Matsuyama, who finished tied for third a year ago, is set to return alongside Min Woo Lee, who is looking to earn Special Temporary Membership on the PGA TOUR. Other notable names include Tyrrell Hatton, Jason Day, Tom Kim, Adam Scott, Si Woo Kim, 2018 winner Aaron Wise, brothers Pierceson and Parker Coody, and J.J. Killeen, a two-time winner on the Korn Ferry Tour who earned his way into the field as the PGA Section Champion. The AT&T Byron Nelson winner will secure a spot in the following week’s PGA Championship at Oak Hill and earn 500 FedExCup points.
