Pro highlights: Won the 2019 WinCo Foods Portland Open presented by KraftHeinz on the Korn Ferry Tour for his first victory as a pro. It was the final regular season event and jumped the former Ohio State product into the top 25 and onto the PGA TOUR. It was also his only top 10 all season, although he made 21 of 24 cuts and had 10 Top 25s. Plied his trade on the Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada from 2013-2015 before getting a half season on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2017 and full seasons there in 2018 and 2019.
Amateur highlights: Once shot 59 on the Gray Course at Ohio State. … First-team All-Big Ten (2009 and 2011) and a second-team All-Big Ten selection in 2008. … Honorable Mention All-American (2009) at Ohio State and a Midwest all-region selection (2009 and 2011). Received the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award in 2009. … Two-time Big Ten Golfer of the Week selection (Feb. 25, 2009; March 11, 2009) and a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree (2009, 2010 and 2011). … Won the 2009 Monroe Invitational.
Interesting tidbits: Is considered a friend of fellow Columbus golfer Jack Nicklaus. Also a member at Scioto like the Golden Bear, Hoag has played plenty of rounds with the 18-time major winner and sat down to a home-cooked breakfast with Barbara Nicklaus. … Still loves and supports Ohio State athletics with a passion. His grandfather also played golf at Ohio State. … Has an economics degree. … Wants to drive a hot lap at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Hoag says (after winning the WinCo Foods Portland Open): “It’s a life-changer for me …You know what’s at stake on a day like today and your mind drifts to it a little bit. You picture what you’re going to be doing after your round ... either back here getting a card on this green or packing your car up to go home. I just told myself I wasn’t going to leave here without getting a card. Great day.”
