New TaylorMade Milled Grind 2 wedges at the 3M Open

On Wednesday, PGATOUR.COM spotted new TaylorMade “Milled Grind 2” wedges at the 3M Open, where PGA TOUR players were testing the new wedges.

Due to the “Milled Grind 2” name, it’s likely that these wedges are intended to be the successors to the original Milled Grind wedges from TaylorMade. Currently, PGA TOUR players such as Tiger Woods, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm use the original milled grind wedges.

Tiger Woods speaks on why Milled Grind wedges allow him to use new wedges more often. Instead of the soles undergoing the typical grinding process, TaylorMade’s Milled Grind wedges are, as their names imply, honed on a CNC-milling machine. This takes human error out of the equation, thus allowing the bounce and grind of the soles to be made to exact specifications.

While TaylorMade has not yet spoken about the new Milled Grind 2 designs, the photos taken of the new wedges by PGATOUR.COM are telling. As with the Milled Grind wedges, the Milled Grind 2 wedges also appear to be milled based on the ridges seen on their soles and hosels.

New on the Milled Grind 2 wedges, however, is a slot that sits directly behind the lower portion of the face on the back cavity; it appears this slot is filled in with some sort of darker material, possibly polymer. The design of the back cavity in general appears to show a protrusion, maybe for center of gravity (CG) location purposes.

Also, the face of the wedges shows a new groove pattern, with two rows of dashed lines between each groove. It’s likely that this design is used to induce greater spin.

Based on the photos taken by PGATOUR.COM, the Milled Grind 2 wedges are currently being made in lofts ranging from 48-to-60 degrees; the 48-degree wedge shown in this story, made for Beau Hossler, has been bent to 46 degrees as the stamping implies, however.

While we wait for TaylorMade to speak on the new Milled Grind 2 wedges, and confirm or deny any of the speculation in this story, enjoy the photos and leave your thoughts about the wedges in the comments below!
