Titleist unveils new 620 MB, 620 CB and T100 irons at the 2019 U.S. Open

Titleist announced today that its TOUR reps and golf club R&D team will be on site at Pebble Beach fitting players into new 620 MB, 620 CB and T100 irons ahead of the 2019 U.S. Open, and getting feedback on the new products from those players. It’s what Titleist calls its TOUR seeding process; before new products come to retail, Titleist seeks feedback from professional golfers.

While Titleist isn’t saying much about the designs and constructions of the new irons, there’s a bit to be learned from their nomenclatures.

The names for the 620 MB and 620 CB irons – which are likely replacements for the 718 MB and 718 CB irons – are a bit of a blast from the past. Tiger Woods used a custom 600-series iron, called a 681, back when he used Titleist irons; he had those irons in the bag for his 2000 U.S. Open victory at Pebble Beach. Also, a number of players on the PGA TOUR, including Adam Scott, still use 680 MB irons, which were released in 2003. The last time Titleist released 600-series irons were the 695 MB and 695 CB irons back in 2006. Since then, Titleist has used 700-series nomenclature for its iron releases, most recently the line of 718 irons.

The T100 irons, on the other hand, carry on the T-series name most recently seen with the T-MB 718 irons released in 2017. While the new T100 irons certainly look at be inspired by Titleist’s most recent AP 718 irons – most notably used by Jordan Spieth -- it remains to be seen whether these are replacements for the popular AP series, or just another option. The AP irons have been a staple in Titleist’s iron lines for years, so if the T100 irons are replacements, that would be big news.

We’ll keep you informed should Titleist reveal more details about the new irons in the coming weeks or months, or if any players officially make the switch to the new irons this week at the 2019 U.S. Open.
