Product Spotlight: Under Armour’s new Spieth 3 golf shoes designed with biomechanics in mind

For its new Spieth 3 golf shoes – the third renditions of Jordan Spieth’s signature golf shoes – Under Armour consulted with a biomechanics expert for insight on torque and body rotation to create better ground contact.

Based on the consultation with J.J. Rivet, who Under Armour says is a “leader in Biomechanics” at the European Tour Performance Institute, the new Spieth 3 golf shoes use “patented rotational resistance and traction, both vertically and horizontally,” according to Under Armour.

“Traction is what separates golf footwear from street shoes,” said Mike Forsey, Director of Global Golf Footwear. “With the Spieth 3, we’ve added vertical traction elements, which allow the golfer to naturally harness vertical force to bring more power to the ball at impact.

The overall weight of the shoes has also been reduced at Spieth’s request, and these are the lightest Spieth shoes yet, according to Under Armour. To lighten up the weight, the Spieth 3 shoes have Clarino microfiber in the upper, a “Smart Woven” jacquard design in the forefoot, and a heel counter for support and comfort, according to the company. They also have a “strategically placed” carbon fiber insert for stability, and an EVA midsole for both comfort and ground support.

For breathability and waterproofing, Under Armour says there’s a membrane designed to both release perspiration and block water from penetrating the shoes.

Additionally, the Spieth 3 shoes use a two-spike-design in the sole -- Rotational Resistance Spikes (RST 2.0) and Softspikes Silver Tornado – that create a lower profile and increased rotational traction while offering less impact with the putting green.

They will be available at retail on February 1 for $200.
