Spotted: New Scotty Cameron prototype putters

You may have seen Adam Scott, Josh Teater or Kenny Perry using a new Scotty Cameron prototype mallet putter at the 2019 Sony Open in Hawaii. In case you didn’t, no worries; I went inside the Titleist Tour Truck on Monday at the Desert Classic to get a look at the new prototypes.

While inside the Tour Truck, I also spoke with Johnny DelPrete, TOUR representative for Scotty Cameron, to get more info about the new putters, which come in 8, 8.5 and 12 models. According to DelPrete, as discussed below, they will hit retail with a soon-to-be-announced name. Read on for more info.

Scotty Cameron TOUR rep DelPrete on the new prototypes …

"Let’s start with the 12. The 12 is going to be our highest MOI (moment of inertia) putter, as you can tell by the design with the fangs rolling out. New aircraft aluminum going all the way back now, not just the inlay. This really helps with feel and sound, which a lot of guys really like and good feedback on it. Sight lines and design of the putter is really advanced. Everything is designed to help aim toward the target, overall. It’s a home-run really for what everyone was looking for.

"He (Scotty Cameron) was looking for something fast, so you know people think Ferrari, yellow, red, so we went with the yellow side. Yellow really pops off of the black contrast."

"And for the other heads, there’s an 8 and an 8.5; it’s the same head, only difference is the low bend and the mid bend shaft. So the mid-bend shaft will give it a face balance, and the low bend will give it a little toe hang. This is our full mallet. Again, the aircraft aluminum all the way back really helps the sound and feel. Same thing with the design of the head. It’s really advanced in how everything… sharp edges… everything aiming towards the target.

"There’s dots inside the dots. So not only do you see that, but it makes the yellow in the dots pop out even more.

"It’s the most next-level advanced design he’s done. Once a player sees it, he’ll see when he hits it down on the ground how unique and special the design is. Everything is shaped so as soon as you set it down square, it helps you aim towards the target.

"The biggest feedback we’ve been getting is how good the feel is, though. So it’s been our biggest feedback so far with the players, as well as when you set it down it sits very, very square."

Launch information …

“They will be launching at the PGA Show next week… they’ll release the name next week. They should be in shops I believe in April.

"So last week we had four in play. Adam Scott used it. Josh Teater and Kenny Perry played the 12. A lot of guys are messing around with the 12 and the 8 so far. We’ll see who puts it in play this week."

Justin Thomas’ new prototype …

“We’ll also have another mini launch to this line in LA and at (The Honda Classic). And Justin Thomas actually used one of those models that we’ll be launching soon as well last week… that’s going to be our newest 5 model, I guess you could call it. He plays the X5 now with the flow neck on it, so when we release the name it will be that name, plus the X5... The head shape’s a little different but again, no more aluminum inlay it’s going to be solid all the way back, little sharper edges to it. Again the whole concept behind it is alignment, aim and square over the ball. The whole entire line is a home-run when it comes to all that.”
