Ryan Burnett wins Bromont Open presented by Desjardins

BROMONT, Québec – Ryan Burnett claimed his first professional victory at the Bromont Open presented by Desjardins after carding a career-low 8-under 62 in Sunday’s final round. David Pastore posted his best showing since the 2019 PGA TOUR Canada season with a solo runner-up finish this week in 20-under. Thomas Hutchison captured his first career top-five and finished in solo third at 19-under.

Burnett tied the course record and low round of the tournament in Sunday’s 8-under 62. After starting off the final round with a bogey, the 24-year-old carded four consecutive birdies on Nos. 3-6 and closed out the front nine with a fifth birdie on No. 9. He made the turn at 4-under and posted a bogey-free back-nine with another four birdies in a row on Nos. 12-15. Burnett found the hazard on No. 18, and was only one stroke ahead of David Pastore who was behind Burnett in the final grouping. Burnett made an up-and-down from 131 yards on his final hole to secure a two-stroke victory over Pastore who bogeyed the 18th.

The California native finished No. 7 in the 2023 PGA TOUR University Ranking after graduating from the University of North Carolina in the spring of 2023. Burnett joined the Korn Ferry Tour mid-season last year via PGA TOUR University benefits. After posting only one top-10 and five made cuts in 11 events, Burnett lost his status on the Korn Ferry Tour and began the 2024 season off with PGA TOUR Americas in Latin America.

Burnett finished outside the top 60 for Segment I, but ultimately regained his membership through PGA TOUR Americas mid-season Q-School. Since then, he posted two top-25s in three events, in addition to this week’s victory at the Bromont Open presented by Desjardins. Burnett becomes the 16th PGA TOUR University alumni to win a professional event and tallies the total amount of victories for alumni to 24.

“It makes it so much sweeter. Golf is a game that's going to beat you down a lot. It's just so different from any other sport. You can compare yourself to others, which I've fallen into in the past,” said Burnett. “At the end of the day, you're the master of your own story and you've just got to work hard and see how it works at the end of the day. After all those hard times, losing Korn Ferry Tour status, having to go to Q-School, this one feels really good.”

Prior to turning professional, Burnett played five collegiate seasons (2018-23) at the University of North Carolina where he claimed three individual victories (2019 Turning Stone Missouri Tiger Invitational, 2023 Calusa Cup, 2023 NCAA Salem Regional). With his victory this week, Burnett joins Korn Ferry Tour member and fellow Tar Heel Ryan Gerard in winning their first professional events at the Bromont Open presented by Desjardins. Gerard won this event two years ago on PGA TOUR Canada, and played on the PGA TOUR the following year through the strength of a solo fourth finish at The Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches. Gerard currently plays on the Korn Ferry Tour and recently secured his second professional victory at the BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by TD SYNNEX last month.

“There are so many guys; Austin Greaser's on the Korn Ferry Tour, Dylan Menante is in the field here this week, obviously Gerard, Ben Griffin, who also won out here on PGA TOUR Canada. We've got a really good crew of guys who have come out in the last four, five, six years and everyone's starting to have success,” spoke Burnett on the North Carolina alumni. “Ryan [Gerard] played great on the Korn Ferry Tour this year and he had special temp on the PGA TOUR last year. Great player, great friend of mine. He sent me a text last night just wishing me well and telling me it was my time to go get it, and I guess he was right.”

Burnett is expected to be in the field at the Commissionaires Ottawa Open, the fifth event of the North America Swing, which will be hosted at Eagle Creek Golf Club from July 25-28 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
